THE 5 MOST IMPORTANT SEO ELEMENTS TO CONSIDER WHEN MOVING FROM OLD WEBSITE TO NEW

Most webmasters or business owners will have experienced a new website launch which involved some sort of migration process. Depending on the site and complexity of the website this can be a tricky process. More often than not, a lot of key SEO elements are overlooked and we will discuss these further in this article.

To begin with it should be noted that there are several types of migration – it is not enough to simply say that we are ‘moving from our old site to new one’. The following are some of the most common types of migration:

1. Hosting / IP address
2. URL Structure
3. Domain name
4. Site Architecture
5. Content
6. Design
From our experience in working with multiple clients with their respective website migrations there are certain issues or SEO elements that always pop up. The following are what we deem to be the most important:

 Compiling All Existing URLs – this may sound like a simple process (how many pages on your website?) but there is always a difference between the number of pages that appear on a website and the number that are actually indexed in search engines. The best way to compile a comprehensive list of existing URLs is to use a crawler (such as screaming frog) for the ‘legacy’ site (old site).

 URL Redirect Mapping – this is an all important stage of a website migration and basically involves mapping pages (URLs) of the legacy site with the pages (URLs) on the new site.
Eliminating Any Broken Links (404s) – inevitably after a website migration there will be some broken links; the key point is to monitor these and fix any as and when they are found.

Measure Site Performance – this refers to measuring and analysing site performance after the site migration is completed. There would be several key metrics including (but not limited to): bounce rates, site speed, traffic stats, time on site as well as other engagement factors. The key thing to look out for is whether there are any stark differences (positive or negative) that could have been caused by the site migration.

Making Test Environment Inaccessible to Search Engine Spiders – before the site migration there will always be testing. It is important that search engines are blocked from accessing the test environment, which can be done in various ways, e.g. password protected page. The aim is to avoid the content being indexed and thus causing duplicate content issues in the future when the site is eventually launched.

There are many different types of websites that would seldom have specific issues but all of the above points apply to all types. By considering and executing all of the above points, a smooth and efficient website migration will be possible. Having said this, there should be continual procedures put in place to highlight any issues that may arise; this could involve encouraging visitors to report any problems they come across and monitoring Google Webmaster Tools to see any issues reported there too.
